Tambuwal, Oyegun meet over plot to impeach Speaker

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Wednesday paid an unscheduled visit to the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress.

Although the reason for the visit was not made public, the Speaker met behind closed doors with the party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. The meeting lasted for about 30 minutes.

It was gathered that Tambuwal was at the party headquarters to brief the chairman about happenings in the House.

He was also said to have discussed strategies on how to thwart attempts by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to impeach him.

Tambuwal arrived the secretariat at about 12.05pm and was received by the APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Senator Shuibu Lawal.

The Speaker waited for close to two hours because the national chairman was not available as at the time Tambuwal arrived.

At the end of the meeting, neither the Speaker nor the national chairman was willing to speak to reporters about what transpired behind the closed doors.

In response to reporters’ enquiries, Tambuwal jokingly said, “Are you not tired of hearing from me? I am tired of speaking o. No, no, it is not a meeting. It is just a nominal meeting.”

However, a member of the party’s national executive committee privy to the meeting, confided in our correspondent, that “the visit was definitely in connection with what happened in the National Assembly last week.

“You cannot also divorce the reason for the visit from the issue of plots to impeach the Speaker and how best the party should respond. You cannot also remove some local issues such as, his joining the Sokoto State governorship race.”

When contacted, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, confirmed the meeting.

He explained that the Speaker had the right to meet with the national chairman at any time.

Mohammed noted that this was even more so that the battle to save Nigeria’s democracy from the clutches of those who were desperate to truncate it had shifted to the National Assembly especially in the House of Representatives.

The party spokesperson said, “He (Tambuwal) is the Speaker. He can see the national chairman of the party anytime. Don’t forget that, the battle today has shifted to the National Assembly.

“The political battle today is no longer in the state; it is at the centre and at the National Assembly especially the House of Representatives.

“So, normally, you are going to see the Speaker in constant consultation with the national chairman and the leadership of the party,” he said.
