How to Deal With Loved Ones Who Refuse to Change

It can be very challenging to accept everything about a person. And when you love someone, you have a tendency to change something about them. This is what to do when they refuse.

Steps

    1
First of all, know that change can be very hard to some people. When you're changing a something about yourself, you can feel vulnerable, confused or even angry. You may feel that you're not allowed to be yourself, that you are wrong. This is one of the main reasons people don't change.

Think about what you ask. You really have to think about what sacrifice you're asking your loved one to make. Is it really something worth spending time on? Is it something that you yourself is unhappy about, or is it something hurting your loved one? It could be an abuse, in this case, you're right in wanting them to change. Ask yourself, is this really necessary for my loved one to be happy? If not, then think again. Does it make other people(including you) unhappy? If no, there's really no reason for change.

If it makes your loved one unhappy, you should try to help them. But know, that sometimes the person will state that they feel perfectly fine. If you know this is not the case, keep trying to convince them to change. But make sure to praise them for their good sides too. This will make sure they don't feel awful about themselves. Sometimes a loved one will have an unhealthy addiction. This could be almost anything from relationships to drugs. Seek help elsewhere too if this is the case. Sometimes they just have a bad habit or negative attitude. Don't underestimate the latter, it can be very hurtful to your own self-esteem.

If it makes you or others unhappy, think about why. Do you just find the habit annoying? Or are you worried? If you're worried, the person involved should be unhappy, if they're not, there's no reason to worry. Maybe it's just a matter of your own bad attitude. If so, try to measure up. Does this one bad habit make your loved one a bad person? If the good outweighs the bad qualities in your loved one, don't make them change. You could suggest it, but don't be angry if they don't. It's probably you who needs to change in this case.

When you're sure they're not gonna change, change yourself. If you can't be with them, you should not. But if the refused change is a minor detail, stay in. Learn to accept your loved one. This is a good practice either way.
