How to Edit a Drive's SMART Status

SMART (also known as Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a monitoring system for internal disks and checks for issues when they become big problems. When Disk Utility on a Mac reports a hard drive failure, you cannot partition it without 3rd-party software. Get rid of the Red Line Of Doom with these steps.

Steps
  1. 1
Open Disk Utility, select the failing drive and click Repair Disk Permissions. If that fails, start up with the Mac OS X installation DVD/Recovery HD and go to step 2.
  2. 2
From the Mac OS X DVD or Recovery HD, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, then select the failing drive and click Repair Disk. If it fails, you need to erase the disk.
  3. 3
Back up all the files on the disk to an external disk.
  4. 4
Erase the disk by clicking the Erase tab, select Mac OS Extended Journaled and then click Erase.
  5. 5
Your hard drive should be good as new and have SMART Status "Verified". If this doesn't work, you need to replace the disk.

Things You'll Need
  • Your Mac OS X installation DVD/Recovery HD
  • An external hard drive
  • A failing hard drive
