How to Find and Update Drivers

Drivers are configuration files that operate your hardware and devices. Installing them can be a bit confusing, especially if they don’t install automatically. Follow these steps to get your drivers up to date, and to make sure that they stay that way.

Steps

Installing Manually

    1
Download the driver. Drivers can almost always be obtained directly from the manufacturer’s website at no cost. Do not download drivers from sources other than the manufacturer.
Drivers are usually found in the Support section of the manufacturer’s website.
    2
Install the driver. Most drivers are self-installing applications. Simply run the program and follow the instructions the program provides
    3
Install the INF file. If the driver does not install itself, you will need to load the INF file manually. To start open the Control Panel. This can be accessed from the Start menu or by typing Control Panel in the search bar.
Open the Device Manager from the list of programs
Windows 8 users can just hit the Windows key + X on the keyboard to go directly to the Device Manager
Open the category for the device you are looking for. Right click on the device you want to install the driver for and click “Update driver software…”
Select “Browse my computer for driver software.”
Click the button on the bottom of the window that says “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”
Click the Have Disk… button. Click the Browse button in the new window.
Navigate to the INF file that you downloaded from the manufacturer.

Using Windows Update

    1
Open the Start menu. Click Devices and Printers. This will open a window displaying all of the devices connected to your computer. Find your computer in the list of devices.
    2
Right-click on your computer. Select “Device installation settings” from the menu. You will be asked if you would like Windows to automatically download the latest drivers for your devices. Select “Yes, do this automatically (recommended).”
    3
Click Save Changes. Windows will now automatically keep the drivers for your hardware and devices up to date.
