How to Be Entertained While on a Long Drive

Everybody's been there. A long drive to God knows where. Sometimes they are four hours long, sometimes they are six hours long. Either way, they're boring. Here is a guide for you and your family on the next long drive.

 Steps

  1. 1
Be aware how long the trip will be so you can plan ahead. You may intend to sleep for the whole journey, but if you only pack enough to keep you occupied for 15 minutes on a 3 hour drive, then you need to think again before you travel.

  2. 2
Be Organised. Many things can make a trip more interesting and comfortable, such as:

    • Music. Your music can be any form you like: an iPod, a smart phone that stores music, an iPad, or even a CD that you can pop in on the way. Either way make sure it’s something you want to hear that will get you pumped for wherever you’re going.
    • Books. Books are always entertaining, especially if you like to read. You could bring a regular book or use a digitally downloaded one. If you don’t like books, perhaps bring a magazine you like.
    • Blankets and cushions. Blankets are really good if you have a cold car or during early morning car rides, and a cushion can double as a pillow if you want to sleep. Make sure that your blanket is nice and fluffy or really warm. The cushions also make long trips more comfortable, especially on roads that are in poor condition.
    • Snacks. Snacks are very good for wasting a bit of time while in the car and will stop you from spending money at a service station. Recommended things to eat would be nuts, cookies, cut fresh fruit and vegetables, muffins, boiled sweets or jelly sweets. Excessive sugar and caffeine can make people irritable, so its wise to be selective. Don’t forget to bring something to drink. Water is always good for the car, and while other drinks (excluding alcohol) are fine, its wise to take them in a easily sealable bottle to avoid spills.
    • Puzzles and games. Electronic equipment such as smart phones and tablet computers can be used to play games, as well as being practical by allowing you to work on email or other things. Its best to take headphones so you do not disturb others, unless you play a game that all passengers can play together.
  3. 3
Get engaged with your surroundings. When driving through the countryside, its especially good to look around and make the experience more rich.

  4. 4
Stop and exercise often. It may be to stretch your legs or get some fresh air out of the car. Stopping every half hour for a few minutes can refresh both the driver and the passengers and provide interval breaks so it doesn't seem such a long drive.

Warnings
  • If you're driving, you should never eat, play games or read behind the wheel. Its still wise to stop often whenever necessary. You can listen to music though.
  • Don't text while driving. Never do that for entertainment or for any other reason.
  • Take care if you become drowsy. Allow someone else in the car to drive, find a safe place to park so you can take a nap, or find lodging for the evening and resume the drive in the morning.
